A new web-based service promises to streamline communication between manufacturers and rapid prototyping service bureaux worldwide.

Spatial, a developer of 3D solid modelling software, has launched Bits2Parts.com, a web-based service focused on improving the quotation, communication and data flow between manufacturers and rapid prototyping service providers.

Bits2Parts.com is the latest addition to Spatial’s web division PlanetCAD, which provides 3Dshare.comT, an internet-based service for online design and manufacturing collaboration.

Bits2Parts.com is supported by big industry players including Caterpillar and Cummins Engine.

Chad Buchanan, rapid prototyping supervisor at Cummins Engine, said: `Quotes are needed in hours not days, and parts in days not weeks, and the online service has the potential to help improve communications for companies.’

Bits2Parts.com will provide private, online work areas for manufacturers to manage the request for quotation (RFQ) process, submitting RFQs to rapid prototyping service bureaux and uploading 3D CAD models for rapid transmission.

Isaac Kato, vice-president and general manager of Spatial’s PlanetCAD division, said: `Bits2-Parts.com will act as a common location for manufacturers and service bureaux, helping eradicate delays in production by enabling swift, accurate communication and product data online.’
