Alice Clarke has just returned from three months in Barcelona. ‘I always wanted to work abroad, and I speak some French, Spanish and German,’ she says.

Clarke has a place at Nottingham University to study manufacturing engineering with management and Japanese. Her A-level Spanish clinched her ECFY placement with Barcelona Centre de Technologies, which is involved in automotive design for Seat and Volkswagen.

‘I worked in the training department redoing course exercises,’ Clarke says. Having done a two-week computer aided design course as part of the preparation for her placement, she ended up producing training materials in several media, including CD-ROM, for the Centre de Technologies.

The work was hard but rewarding, she says. ‘If I had not lived away from home before it would have been scary.’ The foundation year has strengthened her resolve to get more work experience abroad: ‘I hope to go to Japan in two years’ time.’
