Leading centre-left journalist Will Hutton is to step down as editor-in-chief of The Observer to oversee a radical transformation of The Industrial Society into a campaigning think-tank on workplace issues.

Hutton, who has long been a leading advocate for the importance of manufacturing, will take over from Tony Morgan as chief executive in February next year.

Hutton’s appointment is part of a bid by the UK’s largest independent training and advisory body to increase its influence among industry and policy leaders.

Hutton said: `I want to see the Industrial Society become the country’s leading advocate of cultural, institutional and policy changes on workplace issues.’
