Lucent to build $200 million Internet services network

Lucent has announced a $200 million agreement that will enable IP Communications to bring voice, data and Internet access to businesses from California to the Great Lakes.

Lucent Technologies has announced a three-year, $200 million agreement that will enable IP Communications to bring voice, data and Internet access to businesses and residences from California to the Great Lakes.

IP Communications plans to be among the first in the US to offer voice services over a data network and expects to begin offering such services in Texas in 2001.

The agreement expands the relationship between the two companies, which in December of 1999 announced that Lucent would provided data systems and products for IP Communications’ operations in Texas.

Under the contract, Lucent will supply Stinger Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Access Concentrators, PacketStar Access Concentrators PSAX 1250, PSAX 2300 and CBX 500 Multiservice Wide Area Network switches.

Lucent’s Worldwide Services organisation will provide installation, maintenance and monitoring services as well as expertise to implement the network, increase efficiency and provide excellent service reliability to IP Communications’ customers.

Through the Network Knowledge Center in Denver, Worldwide Services will provide surveillance, fault management, configuration and maintenance support from on-site technicians.

In addition to voice services over its data network, IP Communications also plans to offer advanced Internet access and remote Local Area Network (LAN) connections for small and mid-sized businesses.

Remote LAN connections allow several company locations to share and exchange data. IP Communications will deploy Lucent’s Stinger DSL access concentrators to provide a range of data services, including Symmetric DSL and ISDN DSL for businesses, Asymmetric DSL for business and residential customers and G.lite for residential customers.
