The LTC1871 from Linear Technology is a current mode DC/DC controller IC for step-up, flyback and SEPIC applications.
The LTC1871 eliminates the need for a sense resistor by using MOSFET RDS (ON) and achieves efficiencies up to 96%. With a programmable operating frequency from 50kHz to 1MHz, designers can choose from a wider range of inductors and capacitors, better optimised cost, performance and size.
In addition, users can program the mode of operation of the IC. Pulse-skip operation can be used for constant frequency applications, and Burst Mode operation for the highest efficiency at light loads.
The LTC1871 operates with input voltages ranging from 2.5V to 36V and is a good choice for Voice Over IP and SLIC power supplies, cable TV distribution systems, base stations, portable computers and printers.
The LTC1871 drives an N-channel power MOSFET to deliver output power and can be synchronised to an external clock for use in communication systems.
The LTC1871 features output overvoltage protection and a precision ±1% internal voltage reference. The IC is offered in 10-lead MSOP package and is rated for industrial temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.
