Video over wireless

ViXS Systems has announced that its video networking processor ‘XCode’ is sampling to early customers, enabling products to transmit broadcast quality video reliably across wireless LANs. The ViXS XCode integrated circuit (IC) adjusts bit-rates, resolutions and formats of multiple MPEG video streams, in real time, adapting each stream to changing network bandwidth. The available bandwidth of wireless LANs is notoriously dynamic, a characteristic that has hampered the deployment of wireless video to date.

The XCode video network processor manages video in this difficult wireless networking environment and guarantees 30 frames per second (FPS) of video over any type of internet protocol (IP) network, wired or wireless.

The ViXS XCode video network processor has the ability to reduce bitrates from high-definition (HD) resolutions down to standard definition and QCIF resolutions, and format convert from MPEG1 to MPEG2 or MPEG2 to MPEG4 (ASP). The chip is a solution for home gateways that require broadcast quality video and a high quality of service (QoS) delivery of video over wired and wireless home networking technologies. Because the XCode adjusts the bit-rate, resolution and format of the video, in real time, it overcomes the current obstacles to adoption faced by cable and satellite operators in delivering multiple unique channels of consistent, broadcast quality video over wireless networks in the home.

With the ViXS’ XCode technology, video can be viewed on any display device in the home, such as PDAs, personal computers, personal video recorders (PVRs), and TVs, with each device receiving a unique channel. This capability enables a new class of consumer products such as media centres that stream video to any networked device or TV in the home, and new applications such as shared PVR over wireless networks. Commercial applications also benefit by having the ability to stream broadcast quality video over corporate LANS or 802.11 hot spots. The ViXS solution includes network management software that monitors and manages the video streams, delivering the video to each client device. To shorten product development time, an XCode development kit ships with a complete set of software tools to develop applications such as MPEG players and shared personal video recorders (PVR).

The XCode IC provides content security with DES, Triple DES or AES encryption technologies and supports standards-based low-cost networks such as WiFi (IEEE 802.11), Ethernet, HomePNA, and Powerline networking. In addition, ViXS Systems has released to manufacturing an IEEE 802.11 wireless communication processor optimised for wireless video networks, which will complement the XCode video networking processor for wireless video gateways and high-performance video clients.
