Close look at art

A work of art, reminiscent of Picasso’s Blue Period, has won its designer €5,000 (over £3,000) in an international contest. However, whereas the Spanish artist used paint and a canvas, Dr Andreas Fuhrer of ETH Zurich in Switzerland created ‘Nano rings’ under a microscope.

Along with 300 other applicants, Fuhrer entered the work (below left) in this year’s International Scanning Probe Microscope Image Contest (SPMage07) which aims to recognise the significant role Scanning Probe Microscopes (SPMs) play in nanotechnological developments by identifying ‘important and remarkable’ images. Scientific and artistic merit were also considered.
