A global boom in demand for fibre-optic components has spurred Canadian telecoms networks manufacturer JDS Uniphase Corporation to expand its new UK facilities.

The Ottawa-based supplier of advanced fibre-optics parts last week announced big expansion plans for its new subsidiary SIFAM Fibre Optics, based in Devon, which it acquired in December.

A new production plant in Plymouth and expansion of the specialist component facility in Torquay will boost the existing number of jobs, 200, by an additional 1,000.

Peter Farrie, SIFAM sales and marketing director, said: `Demand for fibre optic components is up as the world’s telecommunications networks are upgraded in response to the growth of the internet.’

SIFAM Fibre Optics’ products are used to split, combine and filter light in optical fibre.
