Radiation used to analyse chemical compositions

Eindhoven University of Technology researchers have discovered a way to determine the chemical composition of chips or coatings. They analyse radiation emitted by an object when it is irradiated by a beam of electrons. The radiation’s wavelength can identify chemical elements, while its intensity indicates proportion. Using a high-resolution electron microscope an area down to 10×10 nanometers can be analysed to find out which elements occur where and in what quantity.
