Scrap car tyres can be recycled back

Scrap car tyres can be recycled back to natural rubber in an environmentally friendly process being developed by tyre maker Goodyear. The tyres are heated to 200-300 degrees C at a pressure of more than 30 atmospheres, causing the vulcanised rubber to `crack’ back to natural rubber, which dissolves in a 2-butanol solvent and can be recovered later by filtration or centrifuging. In lab trials, more than 90% of the rubber was recovered with its microstructure intact.
