BAE Systems signs with US Navy for rocket guidance

BAE Systems has signed a low-rate initial production contract with the US Navy for the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS), a guidance kit that transforms unguided rockets into laser-guided missiles.

The US Marine Corps will initially deploy APKWS from AH-1W Cobra helicopters.

Developed by BAE Systems in partnership with the US government, APKWS provides aviators with a precision weapon that is effective against soft and lightly armoured targets.

Full-rate production of the system is expected to follow from mid-to-late 2012 and may entail the expansion of existing BAE Systems production facilities, depending on demand.
