Raytheon’s Elcan Optical Technologies business has begun production delivery of 100GHz DWDM (dense wave-division multiplexing) thin film filters.

Raytheon’s Elcan Optical Technologies business has begun production delivery of 100GHz DWDM (dense wave-division multiplexing) thin film filters for the optical communications industry.

Elcan is currently shipping production quantities of 100GHz filters to three customers with a fourth due to come on stream shortly.

DWDM is a technology that directs large amounts of data traffic using multiple wavelengths of light on fibre optic lines. The generation of DWDM fibre optic communication systems currently being introduced uses 160 different wavelengths across the communications spectrum.

These systems require narrow 100GHz filters, such as those produced by Elcan. The filters are a critical enabling technology for fibre optic communications systems suppliers as they move to multiple terabit capability for super high-speed data transfer.

Approximately one-third of Elcan’s planned production capacity is in place at Elcan’s 300,000-square-foot Midland plant.

A second production facility is planned for Elcan’s 100,000-square-foot Richardson, Texas, plant, where operations are to begin by the end of the first quarter 2001.
