TelCom Semiconductor have made two new additions to their proprietary line of fan controllers, the TC652 and TC653. These devices integrate a temperature sensor and a brushless DC fan controller with FanSense technology in a small 8-Pin MSOP package.
The TC652 and TC653 are specifically designed for a variety of modern electronic equipment ranging from notebook and personal computers to set-top boxes and networking equipment.
TelCom’s patented FanSense technology has the ability to detect fan fault conditions and therefore increase system reliability while eliminating the need for a more expensive three-wire fan. In addition, it aids in system testing and guarantees consistent fan start-ups. ‘The TC652 and TC653 drive any standard two-wire fan through a low cost transistor or logic level MOSFET and provide temperature proportional fan speed control, whereby the fan speed is increased linearly from 40% (50% for TC653) speed to 100% speed based on a user-selectable temperature range.
These ICs manage fan speed based on the measured junction temperature with a typical accuracy of +/- 1% from 25C to 70C. They operate from 2.8V to 5.5V supply and feature a low operating current of 60uA (typical). They eliminate the need for additional temperature sensors with the inclusion of an on-chip over temperature alarm. The TC652 also features a minimum fan speed setting, while the TC653 has an auto shutdown mode should temperature fall below the factory set point. Packaged in an 8-Pin MSOP, one thousand piece pricing for the TC652 and TC653 starts at $1.39.
