Electric motor/generator powers GM test car to near 80 mpg

Unique Mobility has announced that General Motors Corp’s Precept high-mileage prototype car, incorporating Unique’s electric motor/generator, has achieved a fuel economy of nearly 80 miles per gallon.

Unique Mobility has announced that General Motors Corp’s Precept high-mileage prototype car, incorporating Unique’s electric motor/generator, has achieved a fuel economy of nearly 80 miles per gallon of gasoline in tests – meeting a goal set by automakers and the Federal government in 1994.

GM unveiled the Precept in January and said then it would achieve about 90 miles per gallon on diesel fuel, or 80 mpg on gasoline. In a GM announcement made on Friday, October 20, 2000, Jeff Kuhlman, GM’s Director of Public Relations said, ‘The Precept is the first vehicle developed under the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles to hit the goal.’

The program was aimed at designing a midsize, five-passenger car that gets 80 mpg. According to GM, testing has proved the Precept would get 90.9 mpg of gas on the highway and 72.2 mpg in the city for a combined fuel economy of 79.6 mpg.

Unique Mobility’s electric motor is part of the rear drive system of the car, operating as an input to the transmission along with the engine. The 15 kW/20 hp high torque (150 Nm/110 lbfft) motor performs many critical functions within the vehicle, including engine starting; engine power assist/boost; regenerative braking to capture vehicle braking energy; and battery charging using engine power.

The electric motor operates at engine speeds, requiring no additional gearing, and has a total length of only 10 cm (3.9 in). A short overall length is an enabling attribute within parallel hybrid drivetrains, where the engine, transmission and electric motor are all ‘in-line.’

Unique accomplished this short length by employing high pole-count technology, which also minimises copper and magnet material content. High efficiency is another critical attribute of this design since efficiency directly impacts vehicle fuel economy and operating temperatures.
