The article by the British Airways chairman on global warming (Viewpoint, 15 January) is the type of thing we have heard a lot of from the airline industry.

He said that a reduction in flying is not the answer. Well he would, wouldn’t he? Just as the car industry won’t want to see fewer cars on the road, the airlines don’t want passenger numbers to fall. But if that is what it really takes to tackle the environmental problems we face, then the interests of these big businesses will have to take second place.
