Here come the nanotechnology-based solar cells

Matsushita Electric has joined forces with CA-based Nanosys to jointly develop a new line of nanotechnology-based solar cells.

The Matsushita Electric Works (MEW) has joined forces with CA-based Nanosys to jointly develop a new line of nanotechnology-based solar cells.

The collaboration will combine the nanocrystal, nanocomposite technologies owned by Nanosys with MEW’s mass production technology.

Nanocomposite organic solar cells are theoretically less expensive to produce than silicon solar cells, but their low cell conversion efficiency and short operating lives have been a challenge for developers.

The collaboration aims to change this by raising the efficiency and life of the cells to the level of their silicon solar cell counterparts.

MEW plans to sell the solar cells for use in residential and commercial buildings as well as outdoor facilities in Japan and Asia – but this may not be until 2007.
