Marconi links up with ArrayComm to boost 3G mobile performance

Marconi Mobile has announced an equity investment and long term agreement with ArrayComm to develop a third-generation wireless infrastructure for UMTS.

Marconi Mobile SpA, the mobile division of Marconi has announced an equity investment and long term agreement with ArrayComm to develop a third-generation (W-CDMA) wireless infrastructure for UMTS.

ArrayComm’s IntelliCell technology uses proprietary software and standard antenna arrays to continuously optimise, in real time, communication channels with every wireless user.

Whereas traditional wireless systems, such as standard GSM, CDMA or 3G systems, waste most of their capacity and signal quality by broadcasting energy in all directions, the same systems enhanced by IntelliCell technology do exactly the opposite.

IntelliCell technology sends energy directly to each user while carefully avoiding interfering with other users. In fact, IntelliCell technology can multiply spectrum re-use by creating multiple spatial channels on top of traditional voice and data channels.

For carriers, this means fewer base stations, more efficient use of spectrum, and higher profitability. For end users, it means fewer dropped calls, faster data rates and better service quality.

IntelliCell technology is deployed commercially in more than 65,000 base stations serving more than five million customers in China and Japan and other Asian countries.

ArrayComm’s IntelliCell software works in all current systems in the market including W-CDMA, GSM, PHS, and i-BURST, ArrayComm’s portable broadband system.
