Overdrive enhancements

VX Corporation has enhanced the ability of its VX Overdrive CAD/CAM software to directly read, write and heal files created with other systems.

The company claims that the new functions in VX add powerful interoperability and legacy data management capabilities that meet the complex needs of designers who deal with a variety of CAD systems and formats every day.

VX Overdrive extends its powerful interoperability capabilities for operating in today’s multi-vendor environments with direct import of Parasolid-based files as well as Pro/E and CATIA files.

New healing tools flag problems in geometry such as missing tangencies and mismatched surfaces, which can be automatically or manually repaired.

The STEP and IGES interfaces have also been enhanced to identify a larger amount of ‘smart geometry’ created in other CAD systems (such as surfaces resulting from filleting operations). The company claims that unlike competing systems which rely on third-party solutions, VX doesn’t introduce non-parametrically linked import and export operations.

‘Interoperability has become a hot button issue for many CAD users,’ says Bob Fischer, vice president of sales and marketing. ‘With so many different systems and all of the legacy data resident in corporations, interoperability is a must. Users are on the receiving end of a mix of non-native data and in turn often have to send files to suppliers and partners. Having a product that easily and effectively handles that mix of file formats gives them a powerful and competitive advantage.’

In VX software, the repair of problem CAD geometry is typically handled by a proprietary technology known as Proximity Compliant Tolerancing. Built into the VX modelling kernel, this technology recognises geometric errors as they are encountered during modelling operations.

The small gaps and vertices that should not exist are automatically repaired. Other modelling kernels rely on fixed, relative or adaptive tolerancing schemes that require additional user involvement and can result in loss of accuracy throughout the model.

With the new healing functionality, users can automatically heal an imported file or step through a case by case examination of each trouble spot, identified by colour.
