Fieldbus connects to legacy hosts

The Rosemount Model 3420 Fieldbus Interface Module (FIM) from Emerson Process Management provides an interface between Foundation Fieldbus devices and any host system with Modbus capability.

Additional host protocols such as OPC, Modbus TCP/IP, and others will become available in future releases. The initial FIM release supports temperature and pressure monitoring applications using Emerson Fieldbus devices.

The product allows users in facilities with existing hosts without Fieldbus I/O to obtain the benefits of Fieldbus networking and the capabilities of Foundation Fieldbus products, including multi-sensor devices and diagnostics information.

The Model 3420 interfaces with up to four Foundation Fieldbus H1 segments, with the potential to connect up to 64 Fieldbus devices. In temperature applications using the Rosemount Model 848T eight input temperature transmitter, up to 416 temperature points can be monitored using a single FIM.

The Model 3420 is powered by 24VDC and provides power to each of the devices on the Fieldbus segments. Optional power conditioners integral to the NEMA 4X /IP65 enclosure provide a package that can be installed in any indoor or outdoor general purpose area including certification for FM & CSA Class 1, Division 2 and CENELEC Type n.

Configuration of the Fieldbus devices and setup of the Model 3420 is accomplished using an embedded web server in the FIM and a standard internet browser on a PC. The Ethernet connection can be made part of a plant’s intranet network for remote access to the measurement data and diagnostic information.
