Zhone Technologies, a developer of telecommunications equipment for the local access network, is to acquire optical networking vendor Sorrento Networks in a stock-for-stock transaction.

This acquisition will give Zhone access to Sorrento’s DWDM and CWDM products enabling its customers to bridge their networks from existing copper-based loops to fibre optics.

The transaction is subject to the approval of each company’s stockholders, regulatory review as well as other customary closing conditions.

It is currently expected to close this summer.

In February this year, Zhone acquired the assets of Petaluma, CA-based Gluon Networks for approximately $7.0 million. Gluon had been a developer of converged switching systems for telecommunications service providers.

Prior to that, last November, the company had itself merged with optical equipment developer Tellium.
