The Polish government has signed a contract to purchase eight CASA C-295 aircraft from the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) in a deal valued at US$212 million.
The C-295s will replace the Polish Air Force’s old An-26’s and deliveries are expected to start in mid 2003.
The CASA C-295 is a last generation medium military transport aircraft powered by two turboprop engines from Pratt and Whitney with rear ramp access, a payload of more than 9000 kg and modern avionics from Sextant Avionics. It is said to have the best life cycle cost (LCC) in its class.
The CASA C-295 is already in production and first deliveries to the SpanishAir Forces are expected before the end of this year.
Part of the deal requires confirmation that the bidder was willing to take part in the privatisation of the PLZ Warsaw Okecie, an aeronautical company with more than 700 employees.
According to a statement from EADS, the initial purchase of 51 percent of Okecie by EADS CASA means a great progress for the integration of the Polish industry in Europe.
