Siemens awarded drive technology contract

The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) has landed an order from Voest Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (VAI) to supply the drive technology for hot-galvanising plants one and two in the new cold rolling mill of Benxi Iron&Steel (Group) Company in China.

The order, which is worth around five million Euros, includes the engineering, manufacturing, and supply and commissioning of approximately 500 closed-loop-controlled three-phase drives. The project is scheduled for commissioning in 2006.

Benxi Iron&Steel is located in China’s north-eastern province of Liaoning and produced around seven million metric tons of steel in 2003. With this new cold rolling mill the company is planning to increase its capacity for flat products. Together, the hot-galvanising plants will produce around 840,000 metric tons of galvanised sheet metal for the automotive industry and other customers.

The two plants will be entirely equipped with drive systems made by Siemens. These will include around 500 AC motors with outputs up to 1000 kilowatts, as well as supply closed-loop control units from the “Simovert Masterdrive” series.
