Babcock and Balfour Beatty embark on Sellafield project

A joint venture comprised of engineering support services company Babcock and infrastructure contractor Balfour Beatty has announced that it has been awarded a contract worth in excess of £200m for the Early Contractor Engagement phase of the Box Encapsulation Plant Product Store 1 and Comprehensive Import Export Facility (BEPPS1 and CIEF) project by nuclear-processing site Sellafield.

The contract involves a two-year initial Early Contractor Engagement phase, to start almost immediately.

The implementation phase, which commences in 2013, comprises the detailed design, procurement, construction and commissioning, and is scheduled for completion in 2019.

The BEPPS1 and CIEF project comprises the completion of a nuclear waste store and a new import/export facility to handle radioactive waste arising from nuclear decommissioning operations at the Sellafield site in West Cumbria.
