Somerset councils closer to launching LGA nuclear group

Somerset councils are moving a step closer to setting up a ‘New Nuclear Local Authority Group’, with an official request for backing from the Local Government Association (LGA).

A group of local authorities led by Somerset County Council, West Somerset Council and Sedgemoor District Council have asked LGA chief executive John Ransford for approval to set up an LGA Special Interest Group for councils affected by new nuclear-build proposals.

The request follows a meeting of nine local authorities to discuss new nuclear issues at last month’s annual LGA conference in Bournemouth.

With the LGA’s support, the group will be able to speak to government with more authority on matters surrounding nuclear power.
