Babcock and Balfour Beatty JV wins Sellafield SMF contract

Nuclear power company Sellafield has awarded SMF Delivery Team, a Babcock and Balfour Beatty joint venture (JV), a contract for the early contractor engagement phase of the Silos Maintenance Facility (SMF) at the Sellafield site in West Cumbria.

The purpose of SMF is to support the operations and maintenance of machinery that will be used to retrieve wastes from various facilities at Sellafield — making it vital to Sellafield’s hazard reduction programme.

The scheme has a total value in the region of £150m.

Starting almost immediately, phase one will see the early engagement of the SMF Delivery Team in the design process, in an integrated team led by Sellafield, to deliver the concept and preliminary design.
