MTL has acquired Standard Automation & Control LLC, a supplier of real-time automation and information technologies to the industrial market in the southwest and Rocky Mountains areas of the USA.
Standard Automation offers a suite of open system software components encompassing man-machine interfaces for supervisory control, data acquisition and monitoring; plant historians; batch management applications; plant automation systems for managing, controlling and improving manufacturing processes; and asset management and maintenance systems.
MTL manufactures and markets electronic devices for the protection of instrumentation located in hazardous areas, as well as a major supplier of data acquisition products and electrical surge protection devices. The broad ranges of MTL products are used in the measurement and control of a wide variety of industrial processes in both hazardous and non-hazardous environments.
The company also offers the MTL8000 Process I/OTM system, an open I/O platform that has been widely accepted as a control platform by major DCS vendors, including Fisher-Rosemount, Siemens-Moore Products, Honeywell, Measurex and, most recently, GE Fanuc. The product addresses I/O needs in any process environment, including harsh and hazardous areas, and has approvals from Factory Mutual, CSA and BASEEFA for use in hazardous applications throughout the world.
Numerous open standards such as Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet, Foundation Fieldbus and Hart, are supported. Typical applications include pilot plants, gas pipeline compressor monitoring, smaller batch chemical processes and offshore oil drilling and exploration systems.
Doug Whitehouse, President of Standard Automation, commented: ‘We have always prided ourselves on being able to offer a complete software solution to our customer base. If a customer needed a new communications server, we developed it for him. However, we were unable to supply all of his data acquisition and control needs. Now, with the addition of MTL’s Process I/OTM product line, we can better serve our customers.’
Dennis Gillespie, President of MTL Inc, remarked on the acquisition: ‘This is an important part of our strategy to evolve our traditional intrinsic safety business, with its dependence on the oil and gas and petrochemical industries, into a broader-based process control business. It enables us to further extend our hardware and firmware offering. Our goal is to address the needs of the process industries with a complete line of open system building blocks.’
The acquisition of Standard Automation will enhance MTL’s position in the process automation market. It is part of the company’s planned three-pronged strategy to maintain its presence and increase market share in its traditional intrinsic safety business and to expand in the broader business areas of process I/O and surge protection.
The MTL8000 can be used in the harshest plant applications. It provides the most cost effective intrinsic safety solution in the world, as it integrates intrinsic safety and sensor signal conditioning into one package, replacing today’s traditional solution of separate barriers and signal conditioning systems.
