Scott Health & Safety, part of Tyco Fire & Security, has been awarded a contract to supply the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) with a new military respiratory protection kit. Around 25 jobs are expected to be sustained or created at Scott’s Skelmersdale base.
Known as the General Service Respirator (GSR), the kit includes a newly designed mask and filter along with associated products. The Scott GSR will be issued to all UK Service personnel.
The initial contract is valued in excess of $70 million. With replacements and spare parts the potential total value of the contract, including the service life of the Scott GSR, is expected to be in excess of $200 million.
This contract award follows a 14-month assessment phase and a subsequent competitive selection program.
“The user requirement document for the GSR set very precise performance standards,” said Nigel Holmes, Scott’s Program director for GSR. “Building on MoD sponsored research run by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) at Porton Down, England, Scott was required to develop a series of new, and where appropriate, patented technologies to achieve the targets set.”
Lord Bach, UK Minister for Defence Procurement commented that the Scott GSR “will give our troops an unparalleled level of protection from all manner of threats – from biological and chemical weaponry to industrial chemicals and other hazardous airborne materials.”
“A respirator can be uncomfortable to wear, reduce your field of vision and make using other equipment, such as weapons, difficult,” continued Lord Bach. “A key part of the programme was addressing these issues, and the new GSR will be an improvement in every respect on anything else available in the world.”
