Ultra awarded £200 million 7E7 contract

UK-based Ultra Electronics has been awarded £200 million to supply key elements of the Wing Ice Protection System for Boeing’s new 7E7 Dreamliner.

UK-based Ultra Electronics announced today that its Controls division has been selected to supply key elements of the Wing Ice Protection System (WIPS) for Boeing’s new 7E7 Dreamliner aircraft.

Ultra will undertake system integration and provide the WIPS controlling software together with associated electrical and electronic equipment. With this award, the 7E7 programme is expected to generate over $200 million of original equipment and aftermarket sales for Ultra.

The 7E7 Dreamliner is scheduled to enter service with airlines in 2008. The WIPS will provide electro-thermal ice protection to the leading edge slats of the 7E7 wing.

The electro-thermal WIPS is said to be a new approach to wing ice protection that avoids the use of bleed air from the engines, which adversely impacts aircraft fuel efficiency. The complete system comprises controlling software, distributed power controllers, extending and retracting electrical harnesses and slat heater mats.
