ABB wins power systems orders for marine drill ships

Power and automation technology company ABB has won orders worth $35m (£22m) to provide complete power systems, drilling drive and propulsion systems for two new deep-water drill ships to be built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) at its shipyard in South Korea.

The rigs, which are scheduled to be comissioned by mid-2010, will be operated by Queiroz Galvão Óleo e Gás and Delba Drilling for Petrobras.

ABB’s scope of supply under the orders, which were booked in the third quarter, includes complete electrical systems for the drill ships, which are used for oil and gas exploration drilling.

Delivery for each rig includes power generation, high and low-voltage distribution systems, drilling-drive systems, propulsion-drive systems and related engineering services.
