Indian Railways awards Cintec bridge analysis contract

Newport-based structural engineering company Cintec has been awarded a contract with Indian Railways worth £400,000.

The two-year programme will draw on Cintec’s structural repair and reinforcement knowledge to analyse rail movements on five bridges in the Calcutta area.

The bridges will be analysed to determine their weight-bearing capacity, which currently bears rail trucks of up to 20 tonnes per axle in weight.

It is hoped that, through measurement of factors such as the speed of the trains and the flexion of the bridge arches, this capacity can be increased to between 24 and 25 tonnes.
