Southwest Airlines orders world’s first Boeing 737 MAX

Dallas-based carrier Southwest Airlines has announced a firm order for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, making it the launch customer for the new-engine variant, as well as for 58 next-generation 737s.

The order is the largest in Boeing history both in monetary value, nearly $19bn (£12.2bn) at list prices, and the number of aircraft.

It supports Southwest’s initiative to modernise its all-Boeing fleet, which is the world’s largest.

As the 737 MAX launch customer, Southwest will take delivery of the first aircraft when it enters service in 2017.
