12.5 Gbit/s modulator driver uses micro-module technology

Multilink Technology has introduced the MTC5529, what it claims is the industry’s first small form factor 12.5 Gbit/s Non-Return-to-Zero Modulator Driver.

Multilink Technology has introduced the MTC5529, what it claims is the industry’s first small form factor 12.5 Gbit/s Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) Modulator Driver (MDR).

Using Multilink’s Micro-Module technology, the MDR comes in a small form factor (16 x 16 x 1.8 mm) Ball Grid Array (BGA) package, providing a 75% reduction in board area compared to standard MDR’s currently available in the market. Power dissipation is 2.8 W.

The input can be driven single-ended or differentially; single-ended sensitivity is 250 mV. A digital limiting amplifier function ensures a high quality output when less than optimal input signals are provided, whilst an amplitude control feature is designed to provide a consistent output signal shape and crossing point over the full range of control.

Available in two voltage output ranges, the MTC5529-1 provides 4 – 7.4 V output range and the MTC5529-2 provides 3 – 6 V output range.

Product samples will be available this month. The device is priced at $700 in volume quantities of five thousand.
