The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) today launched a new online professional development package aimed at thousands of young engineers.
The IMechE has joined forces with SkilSure Limited (SkilSure), which creates development support packages for UK and international organisations, to create an online version of its 30-year-old Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS).
The ImechE’s MPDS is recognised in universities and industry as the Quality Assured (QA) route to achieving registration as a professional, fully qualified, mechanical engineer. There are currently over 280 organisations both in the UK and abroad operating the MPDS and over 3,000 young engineers are currently enrolled.Having the MPDS online will remove the need for paper-based reports and records for both engineers and the company.
e-MPDS will allow mechanical engineers on the scheme to monitor their progress online for the first time. The online system records plans and objectives for each young engineer registered on MPDS, and allows them to submit evidence to support their achievement of competence in accordance with UK Spec to achieve their professional development goals.
Quarterly reports and annual assessments, including mentor comments, are all recorded online for the duration of the young engineer’s enrolment in e-MPDS. Finally the young engineer’s records are provided on a CD as a permanent record. Additional e-MPDS benefits include supporting engineers in remote locations through online access 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
