UK-based Network Rail has selected AMEC SPIE Rail, in 50/50 joint venture with Cogifer TF of France, as the preferred supplier to undertake ‘high output’ track renewal work across the UK’s rail network.

AMEC will have a 50% share of the value of the final contract following the anticipated completion of its acquisition of SPIE in March 2003. The contract is expected to be worth around £200 million over seven years.

The joint venture will utilise a ballast cleaning machine and a track renewal train which will be procured under separate contracts by Network Rail over the next 18 months from manufacturers in Austria and Switzerland.

The activity will initially cover the Great Western Zone and Eastern Region using specialist engineering trains manufactured to meet UK specifications.

AMEC is also currently bidding for further Network Rail track renewal contracts across the UK network that cover switches and crossings and plain line renewals.
