Micrel has announced the release of MIC2205, a new high frequency, small size dc/dc step-down regulator featuring an ultra-low noise and ultra-low quiescent current standby mode.

The device is said to provide the ideal solution for designers of portable systems such as cell phones, PDAs, and digital cameras. The MIC2205 is currently sampling with volume quantities available within 10-12 weeks. Pricing starts at $1.61 in 1K quantity.

“The MIC2205 addresses three major concerns of portable electronics designers: noise, battery life and size,” said Tony O’Brien, Micrel’s director of marketing, power products. “The chip features up to 100 times less output noise than other solutions, provides a low quiescent current mode of operation to maximise battery life, and comes in a tiny, 3mm x 3mm MLF package.”

The chip offers two modes of operation: low quiescent current (18uA) LOWQTM standby mode and high output current PWM mode. The output noise in standby mode is 75uV versus other solutions at 100mV. The MIC2205 is high-current-capable (600mA) in PWM mode and can provide efficiencies up to 95 percent.

In addition, the MIC2205 saves board space with its very small packaging and a 2.2uF ceramic output capacitor that is up to ten times smaller than other solutions.
