Pay TV on the PC

Hauppauge Digital has unveiled a card reader module for its range of TV viewing cards, allowing users to watch subscription broadcast channels on their home computers

London-based Hauppauge Digital has unveiled a card reader module for its range of TV viewing cards, allowing owners to watch subscription broadcast channels on their home computers.

Hauppage claims the new module, known as a WinTV-CI (Common Interface), is the first to accept any subscription TV CAM (Common Access Module) and valid viewing card to unscramble pay TV on Freeview and satellite.

The WinTV-CI will decode UK pay broadcast services available through Freeview, such as Top-UP TV and Setanta Sports. It can also access some satellite services broadcast across Europe.

Hauppage said use of the Hauppauge WinTV CI is dependant upon obtaining an appropriate CAM for the broadcaster, but that there is currently no compatible CAM available for BSkyB’s Sky TV services.
