The London Climate Change Agency is to install replacement wind turbines at Palestra, its head office building, following the recall of the original Swift turbines.
The recalled turbines were manufactured by Renewable Devices and installed on behalf of Solar Technologies in 2006 by its sub contractor Scottish and Southern Energy. They were originally commissioned in November 2006 and operated for approximately six weeks before being recalled by Renewable Devices due to a component failure.
The LCCA will trial the substitute Swift II wind turbine, developed by Renewable Devices using re-engineered software and different construction to the original Swift Turbines, and one other turbine. Full installation will be subject to the results of the trial installation and is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2008.
The LCCA said it has worked continuously with Solar Technologies to re-install or replace the wind turbines following the product recall. The replacement will now be carried out outside of the original Solar Technologies contract.
