Birse Coastal wins Redcar flood alleviation contract

Birse Coastal, part of Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering, has been awarded a £21m contract to construct a scheme at Redcar to reduce the risk of coastal flooding.

The work, being carried out on behalf of the Environment Agency, will protect the residents of Redcar against sea-level rises that are predicted to be about 85cm over the next 100 years.

The new defences will comprise a sea wall, with features such as steps on the sea-facing slope to reduce the power of the waves hitting the structure, and a curve to the top section, to help to throw water back towards the sea.

Redcar’s flood alleviation defences will stretch for 2.7km, are expected to take two years to finish and will be completed section by section so as to minimise disruption to the town, its residents and visitors.
