ABB awarded $22 million switchgear contract

ABB has received a $22 million order to supply high-voltage gas insulated switchgear to the Bureyskaya hydropower station in eastern Russia.

ABB announced has received an order valued at $22 million to supply high-voltage gas insulated switchgear for the Bureyskaya hydropower station in eastern Russia. It is ABB’s largest contract for power technology equipment in Russia.

The contract, signed with OAO Engineering Centre of the Unified Energy System of Russia (UES), are for the supply, installation and commissioning of a 500 kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS). The project is due to be completed in mid-2004.

The equipment will be part of the system which will transmit electricity from the 2,000-megawatt Bureyskaya hydropower station to power hungry regions in eastern Russia.

The contract is part of Russia’s plan to upgrade its Far East energy system and to further develop and more efficiently transmit hydropower. Hydropower currently accounts for 15 percent of all power generation in Russia.

UES plans to increase power generation from this source from the current 160 billion kWh to 180 billion kWh in 2010, requiring corresponding increases in transmission and distribution capacity.
