Boeing chooses NGS team

Boeing has selected a Hamilton Sundstrand-led team to provide the Nitrogen Generation System (NGS) for the 7E7 Dreamliner passenger aircraft. Two divisions of Cobham, FR-HiTEMP and Carleton Life Support Systems, complete the team.

The 7E7 will be the first commercial jet featuring a nitrogen generating system. The NGS system will produce nitrogen-enriched air to reduce the oxygen content and displace fuel vapour in the aircraft fuel tanks.

Normally, air is about 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, with trace amounts of other gases. The NGS increases the amount of nitrogen, which is then distributed into the space above the fuel in the tank to further reduce flammability risk.

Earlier this year, Hamilton Sundstrand was chosen to supply the 7E7’s environmental control system, electric power generating and start system, remote power distribution system, and the primary power distribution system and auxiliary power unit.
