Transport Scotland and First ScotRail have placed an order with Siemens Mobility for the supply of 38 Desiro UK type electric multiple units.

The order is worth over £240m and includes maintenance and spare parts services.

The order, a first for Siemens Rolling Stock in Scotland, will raise the UK’s Desiro fleet to 354 units.

The 38 new trains, to be built at Siemens’ plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen, Germany, are due to enter passenger service in December 2010. They will operate initially between Ayr and Glasgow.
