Sony UK has opened a new European facility for the assembly and testing of the company’s latest cinema projection systems at its Technology Centre in Pencoed, South Wales.

The facility will supply the new systems to the UK and European markets as well as the Emirates, Russia and South Africa.

Sony said its Welsh plant is now a world-class centre of excellence for the production and testing of professional high-definition broadcast cameras, camcorders and camera systems.

The CineAlta 4K projection systems have an extremely high resolution – four times that of the highest high-definition television – and have a price tag of around £80,000. The new facility has the capacity to produce two complete systems a day.

Steve Dalton, managing director, said that the 4K facility enables customers to be more closely involved with the construction of the projection systems and to see the systems in action. Clients can see the projector before the point of delivery, have a demonstration of the projection system using the mini-cinema, or see it being built.

Two months ago, Sony announced that Sony Pencoed had been chosen as the global centre for manufacturing the first generation of Sony high-definition professional camcorder systems, as well as the location for Sony’s UK service and repair centre for digital cameras and camcorders.
