Renesas and Nokia form strategic partnership

Renesas Electronics, a supplier of semiconductor solutions, and mobile-communications company Nokia have announced their formation of a strategic business alliance to develop modem technologies for Evolved High-Speed Packet Access/Long-Term Evolution (HSPA+/LTE).

As part of this alliance, which will be enhanced by long-term joint-research cooperation on future radio technologies, Renesas will acquire Nokia’s wireless-modem business for approximately $200m (£132m).

The business to be transferred to Renesas includes Nokia’s wireless-modem technologies for LTE, HSPA and GSM standards, as well as patents related to the transferred technology asset.

The planned transfer would also include approximately 1,100 Nokia R and D professionals, the majority of whom are located in Finland, India, the UK and Denmark.
