Today, the European Commission put its seal of approval on the technical specifications of a new digital tachograph, which will record driving times and rest periods of professional drivers throughout Europe.
The new EC specifications themselves define the construction, installation, use and testing of the new machines.
According to an EU White Paper, European legislation on road transport is not only insufficient, but also extremely poorly enforced. The new equipment aims to help out since it’s easier to use, more difficult to manipulate and easier to check by both drivers and enforcement officers than conventional analog tachographs.
These older units comprised a mechanically operated vehicle unit and paper record sheets, while the new digital design comprises a digital vehicle unit and a personal driver ‘smart’ card, issued by the EU Member State in which the driver resides.
The digital tachograph itself will automatically register the activity of the drivers and keep the information for a year. The smart card stores their activities for the last 28 days.
All new road transport vehicles in the EU must be fitted with such digital tachographs within two years.
