ATK (Alliant Techsystems) announced today that it received a $222.6 million system development and demonstration (SD&D) contract from the US Navy to develop the precision-strike AGM-88E Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AARGM).
ATK is the prime contractor for the AARGM, a follow-on, retrofit program to the Navy’s High-Speed Anti-radiation Missile (HARM). Today’s announcement marks ATK’s first contract as prime contractor on a major missile system program.
The SD&D contract calls for the design and development, integration and delivery of 31 missiles that will be used for developmental and operational tests. The contract runs from June 2003 through to September 2008.
According to ATK, AARGM is a high-speed air-to-surface missile employing a new multi-mode seeker that includes an integrated GPS/inertial navigation system, an advanced passive radar seeker, and an active millimetre wave radar terminal seeker.
It will provide US Navy and Marine F/A 18 Hornet and EA-6B Prowler aircrews significantly improved capability to search for, identify and ultimately destroy enemy air defence targets.
