According to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organisation, the world semiconductor market reached a size of $141 billion in 2002.
This was slightly below the forecast that the organisation released in autumn 2002, in which it expected the market to reach $142 billion.
It noted that all regions of the world are expected to experience positive growth in 2003 with a worldwide semiconductor industry growth of 11.5%.
Sensors, digital signal processors and flash EEPROMs will show the highest growth rates in 2003, well above 25%. All other products will be closer to or below the overall market growth rate.
WSTS believes that 2004 will be a year of peak growth (18.4%) and expects the growth of the market to slow after that, with growth rates of 7.9% for 2005 and 3.7% for 2006.
