Minister invited to experience network skills

Innovation, universities and skills minister David Lammy visited Network Rail’s advanced apprenticeship scheme yesterday at HMS Sultan in Gosport, Europe’s largest specialist engineering training centre.

Ahead of this summer’s school leavers looking for a route into employment, the minister was invited for a tour of the facilities to see how Network Rail is providing apprentices with skills in track, signalling, electrification, plant, and telecoms to equip them for a career in the rail industry.

Lammy said: ‘This represents not only our investment in a modern rail infrastructure but also our investment in the skills base of the country.’

Network Rail chairman Ian McAllister added: ‘This vital investment in people will deliver over 1,000 skilled technicians who will become the backbone of Network Rail for the next 25 years.’
