A Northumberland liquids handling engineering company has won two top prizes at the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) sponsored MX 2008 awards for manufacturing excellence.

Ashington-based Phoenix Beattie won the DMG Award for Business Development and Change Management and was commended in the Professional Engineering Award for People Effectiveness category.

Hosted by the Institution for Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and partnered by MAS, the MX Awards recognise and celebrate the best in UK manufacturing. Since working with MAS North East, Phoenix Beattie’s turnover has increased from £16m to £24m, and employee levels have increased from 76 to 90.

MAS North East chief executive, Cameron Ross said: ‘The process of entering MX has proved extremely beneficial for Phoenix Beattie, helping them to think about their business systematically. Winning this prestigious award will undoubtedly keep them motivated to carry on with their best practice programme and continue to act as worthy ambassadors for manufacturing in the north east.’

The MX awards offer an elite panel of industry experts giving free impartial advice in a benchmarking report that has been valued at up to £20,000. The report will offer a ‘top tips’ service to firms with invaluable advice on how to improve performance, taking size, industry and resources into consideration.
