BMW’s Hams Hall facility set to produce i8 sports car engines

The new generation of three-cylinder petrol engines for the future BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car will be produced at BMW’s engine plant at Hams Hall, near Birmingham.

BMW says its i8 is a contemporary sports car that features an eDrive plug-in hybrid concept that combines an electric drive system with a three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine producing 349hp/300Nm.

Acceleration of 0–62mph in less than five seconds combined with the fuel consumption in the European cycle of less than approximately 78mpg is claimed to give sports car performance with small car fuel consumption.
