BEI Duncan Electronics has introduced a non-contacting angular position sensor (NCAPS), developed to provide a cost effective, high-resolution, rotary position sensor. Initially intended for steering angle sensing, NCAPS suits a wide range of applications including automotive, heavy equipment, marine, instrumentation, industrial automation and robotics.

The design uses an adaptation of transceiver technology and digital signal processing techniques. This, together with a combination of proven and durable materials, allows a package of less than 12mm. NCAPS has mechanical memory at start-up and does not require electronic memory or a re-set function. The device is non-contact and measures angular position over a full 360° range with +/- 1.5% absolute linearity.

A wide range of gear reduction and multiplication options that allow for multiple turns are available and NCAPS is tolerant to shaft misalignment and endplay, The non-contact technology offers a wide variety of package sizes, some as small as 37 mm in diameter. The current design has a pulse width modulated output with analogue voltage as an option. Should production volumes require, NCAPS can readily incorporate an Asic to meet special electrical interfaces.
